RFID Card for Hotel Door Access Electronic Lock

RFID cards are commonly used with electronic door locks to provide keyless access control for hotels. Do you know how to use RFID cards for electronic door locks to control hotel access?

RFID cards are commonly used with electronic door locks to provide keyless access control for hotels. Do you know how to use RFID cards for electronic door locks to control hotel access? In fact there are many types of electronic locks, we use contact IC cards, low frequency IC cards, high frequency IC cards as key to access the hotel room, but now RFID cards are more widely used.

The following are some key points about using RFID cards for hotel door access:

Choose RFID frequency

High frequency 13.56MHz provides faster data transfer for electronic locks, mobile access and longer read range. Most hotels use 13.56 MHz Mifare chip which is suitable for mid-scale to premium properties. (Low frequency 125 KHz provides basic functionality with shorter read range.)

Select RFID cards to match electronic lock security level

Mid-range locks (online, 13.56 MHz) use encrypted MIFARE Classic or Plus cards. Advanced smart locks (real-time, 13.56 MHz) use encrypted MIFARE DESFire or Plus cards which also enable mobile key sharing and access apps. [Basic locks (standalone, 125 KHz) use standard cards.]

Provide RFID cards with hotel branding for guests

Include hotel name, logo, address and emergency contact details on the RFID cards. This helps identify the cards as belonging to your property in case lost. Specify that cards remain property of the hotel.

Assign a unique ID to each RFID card

The ID is detected by the electronic lock to verify the guest’s access privileges in the system and allow/deny access accordingly. Lost card IDs must be immediately deactivated to prevent unauthorized use.

Issue RFID cards at check-in for each new guestroom reservation

Staff should properly verify guest IDs before encoding RFID cards and enabling room access. Provide instructions for how guests can a) use the RFID cards with their room locks and b) disable lost card access through the hotel.

Consider optional RFID staff access cards

Consider optional RFID staff access cards – For accessing guest rooms, staff can have special higher security RFID access cards that also require a PIN or biometric (e.g. fingerprint) to unlock doors. Strict staff monitoring policies should always be enforced.

Ensure mechanical key override options are available for emergencies

While rare, technology can experience downtime. Mechanical keys allow manual unlocking of doors even when electronic locks or systems are non-operational. Key access should be strictly controlled and monitored.

Train staff on all areas of managing the electronic door lock system

Includes verifying guest IDs, properly encoding RFID cards, controlling staff access levels, resolving common errors, ensuring key backup, updating software/hardware and regularly monitoring/auditing the system. Effective training is key to success.
